Vestibular disorders are far more common than most people realize. In fact, between 2001 and 2004, an estimated 35.4% of US adults aged 40 and older—roughly 69 million Americans—experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction. The most frustrating part? Conventional medicine still offers few real solutions.
In this blog, we’ll revisit some of the most important points we’ve discussed in the past and share exciting new information from a trusted alternative care practitioner. If you or someone you love struggles with dizziness, vertigo, or other balance issues, keep reading—help and hope are out there.
The Role of Upper Cervical Care in Vestibular Disorders
At our office, we regularly see up to 10 cases of vestibular disease a month. Most of these patients have already been told by their doctors to "learn to live with it" or manage their symptoms with medication—but they aren’t willing to accept that as their only option. Many are desperate for solutions that address the root cause, not just the symptoms.
What’s often overlooked is the link between vestibular disorders and previous neck injuries. We find that the majority of our patients have suffered a whiplash-type trauma at some point in their past—often without even realizing that it could affect them years later.
What is Atlas Subluxation Complex?
A whiplash injury can lead to what’s known as the atlas subluxation complex. In this condition, the top vertebra in the neck shifts out of its normal alignment, causing tears in the supporting tissues and “locking” the joint out of position. This misalignment irritates the central nervous system—specifically, the brainstem, which controls inner ear balance functions.
The result? A chain reaction of neurological issues, which over time can trigger a wide range of health problems—including vestibular disorders.
Our experience: After caring for over 7,000 people, it’s clear that not only are vestibular issues widespread, but many sufferers experience real relief with Upper Cervical Care.
Upper Cervical Care: A Hidden Gem
Upper Cervical Care is still relatively unknown to the public. However, pioneers like Dr. Michael Burcon of Grand Rapids, Michigan, have shown that most cases of Meniere’s disease are caused by the atlas subluxation complex. Dr. Burcon now lectures worldwide at medical conferences, sharing his research on the root causes and solutions for vestibular problems.
Remember: Look beyond the symptoms. Search for the cause—and work to remove it. That’s where real healing begins.
